Mitigating Accra's Flooding & Waste Challenge

Improper waste disposal clogs drainage networks, leading to devastating floods during the rainy seasons. WasteIn builds a transparent value chain that keeps plastic out of gutters and redirects it directly into recycling pipelines.

SDG Alignment & Environmental Impact

Our operations are designed in strict alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to create green jobs while establishing drainage resilience:

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities — Reducing drainage clogging and seasonal urban flooding.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption — Incentivizing source segregation (plastics, paper, metals).
  • SDG 13: Climate Action — Reducing greenhouse emissions by avoiding waste burning and landfills.
  • SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation — Eliminating illegal dumping sites in water bodies.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about the WasteIn service, incentive calculations, and recycler processing loop.

How do I segregate my waste correctly?
Keep dry recyclables (PET beverage bottles, HDPE milk/detergent jugs, clean aluminium beverage cans, cardboard boxes) in a separate bag from wet household organic waste. Please rinse out food residues from containers to ensure high quality verification at our depots and claim maximum rewards.
How and when do I get paid the recycling bonus?
When the collector arrives, they take your segregated waste to the closest Agent Hub. The hub agent scans the booking QR code, weighs the materials on calibrated Bluetooth scales, and inputs the metrics. Once verified, our system instantly triggers a Mobile Money payment directly to your MTN MoMo or Telecel Cash wallet.
Is there a minimum weight requirement for pickups?
For on-demand green collections, we recommend a minimum of 5 kg of segregated materials to make the collection route efficient for our tricycle operators. If you are subscribed to a monthly plan, there are no minimum weight limits, and collections occur weekly on schedule.
How do the monthly impact reports work?
Subscribed households and commercial partners receive a monthly digital impact ledger detailing total kilograms of waste diverted from Accra's storm drains and landfills, total CO2 emissions offset, water saved, and equivalent trees planted. This ledger can also be used for ESG reporting.
What happens to the materials after they are collected?
Aggregated recyclables are shipped directly from our Agent Hubs to local recycling plants. Plastic bottles are recycled by Polytan into polyester fibers, HDPE containers are converted by Trashy Bags into high-quality upcycled bags, and metals are refined into structural sheets at the Valco Smelter.
